| Welcome to the Official Rossland Winter Carnival site!
Rossland Winter Carnival is Canada's longest running winter carnival, 2010 marks the 113th year of celebration!
Winter Carnival has been the highlight of winter in Rossland for over a century. Olaus Jeldness pioneered the Carnival and kept it successful for many years. Olaus was also a grandfather of skiing in Rossland. For years the magic of the Jeldness name evoked “memorable stories of early ski events among the ski fraternity in the province.” Largely as a result of his efforts, the “Royal Sport of Skiing” was firmly established in the Canadian West. Olaus is still honoured every year at Carnival, and this year we are pleased to welcome Olaus' great grandaughter, and her family to spend the Carnival weekend with us.
This year the Carnival will be one week earlier than normal, so as to include the Olympic Torch relay into our celebrations, and will run January 22-24. In keeping with the Olympic spirit there will be a large closing ceremonies, complete with entertainment and podium medal presentations, on Sunday afternoon. We are excited to introduce some new events this year alongside our old favourites, such as the bobsled race, John Heintz relay, and Kids Carnival. Also happening in town Carnival weekend are the Blizzard Music Festial and the Canadian Open Freeskiing Championship, presented by Stikeman Elliott; it is a weekend you don't want to miss!Come join us in celebrating Rossland tradition and pay homage to winter mountain culture, we look forward to seeing you there!
